If the keyboard does not work, move the mouse cursor around the screen. It should take the focus and thus make the keyboard work, although you might need to move the cursor outside the game canvas.

They stopped believing in their own god... They decided they need a god no longer... They built a huge flying palace to rival their own god.

It was a mistake.

A Palace for Fools is a short metroidvania game with gameplay inspired by Mega Man games on NES. Explore the flying palace; shoot enemies; learn new skills and use them to reach places you couldn't reach before; travel to the past.  You know how these games work.

Saving the game

The game lets you save your progress. The progress is stored locally to your computer using a thing called "local storage". It is not persistent, so clearing up your browser's history etc. will remove the game saves.

( × ) means a button in a gamepad. See below.

  • Arrow keys or left analogue stick or dpad: Move and climb
  • Z or (A) : Jump.
  • Jump button on air: If you have a rocket pack, you can press the jump button again on air to use "fly".
  • Down + jump button: slide. A jar of lubricant is required.
  • X or (X): Shoot (requires a hand cannon).
  • Hold shoot button and release: Shoots a bigger, stronger bullet. Requires an improved hand cannon
  • Shift or (Back): Open a map, if you have one.
  • Enter or (Start): Open the pause menu. If you get stuck, you can find "Respawn" option there.

Gamepad support

Xbox-like gamepad are supported, at least most (or some?) of them. Should work on Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Opera etc.) and Firefox, although there might be issues on Firefox. Before you can use the gamepad, you must press any gamepad key to make the game recognize your gamepad.

Supported browsers

  • Chromium-based browsers: Chrome, Opera etc
  • Firefox

Might work on Edge. Does not work on Internet Explorer or Safari.

I like it very much.

hey i love these games, but i wnat to know if you deleted any games. i seem to remember you having other games on your page like a topdown game in the same artstyle as these and a 2d metroidvania about an owl. can you shed some light on this?

Great job! I definitely see a ton of improvement in your more recent games as far as pacing, level and map design, but this was still solid

This game got reviewed by the arcane cache, a very underground blog for very underground games.

When it comes to this genre, one is fast to assume that there are countless well made exponents around – but in reality, most of them lack in their execution in the one way or another. Not so here: While there aren’t any flashy mechanics, twists, or big surprises this game is pretty well made in every aspect and all aspects interlock very well with each other. If you are longing for well executed game design and aren’t opposed to good old retro charm, this game will offer you a perfect storm.

Well done, congratulations!

Seems fun but need to be able to download instead of play in browser.

Super fun.  Thx.

Very cool game. – Please add deadzone for the gamepad controls though. It’s very annoying to let go of the joystick and have the player tiptoeing to the right! Makes it super hard to shoot people to the left of you also…

We just discussed your game on our podcast! Come check us out!

Episode 12: Metroidvanias

I feel bad for killing the giant eyeball. It really seems like she didn't do anything wrong. Then again, I still killed her in spite of that.

I really enjoyed the game. Thank you!

Is there anything past "The End" or is it like an old NES game? Is there is more than one ending?

Nope, there is nothing beyond "The End" screen, and no secret ending.

Awesome game!

I noticed for my gamepad, I could not change the slide direction. It would just go whatever direction was last pressed on the keyboard only.

What gamepad were you using, and what browser (and OS)? The gamepad support isn't very great right now since there are too many different gamepads (and even different Xbox-like gamepads - that in theory should work in an identical way - act differently on the same browser) and every browser has a little different gamepad API implementation (for example, Firefox thinks dpad has two axes, Opera consideres dpad normal buttons)

I played the game through with my gamepads on two different browsers, and it worked fine, so in theory it should work with Xbox-like gamepads...

it was a great game, and with the idea that there may have been other peace of the puzzle that you havn't found :) nice game!

I had to luxury of playing this for the first gameplay video of 2020 on my youtube channel and I can say that the game is well done and it shocking to me that this is only a browser game. I would love to see this make it's way from browser to PC and Console. This was truly wonderful to play and I enjoy it alot.

For those who are interested in game play of the game I am including my gameplay video here:

Looking forward to see more of your projects in the future.

Wow, this is awesome so much mechanics and it feels really polished and engaging! Also the lore is very interesting.
